The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ), a long-standing champion of professional development in the local and regional maritime and logistics sector, is set to host two dynamic training programmes in August and September. Designed to sharpen skills and strengthen workplace performance, both sessions are open to industry professionals locally and regionally.
The first training session, Competence in Microsoft Excel – Intermediate Level, is scheduled for August 27-28 and is a partnership between the SAJ and the Vocational Training Development Institute (VTDI). “At the SAJ, our goal with each training is not only to build practical skills but to ensure participants leave with a recognised qualification that strengthens their career prospects, whether they are job seeking or enhancing their resume,” Yahneake Sterling Russell, Senior Manager, Business Development, Marketing and Member Engagement at the SAJ said. “We chose to partner with the VTDI because they are Jamaica’s premier institution for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, known for their hands-on, competency-based approach and nationally accredited programmes.
Aimed at maritime and logistics professionals, administrative staff, managers, and anyone eager to improve their data management skills, the training will dive into topics such as formulas and functions, pivot tables, data entry efficiency, and practical business applications. By the end of the two days, attendees can expect to work smarter, analyse data more effectively, and produce streamlined reports that drive decision-making.
The second training programme will focus on the Principles of Hazardous Materials Safety and is a partnership with the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU). “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to equipping the industry’s workforce with the knowledge, skills, and recognised qualifications they need to enhance their careers and strengthen workplace safety,” Sterling Russell said. “We are proud to deliver this programme with the CMU to ensure that staff in these areas are trained to meet international standards.”
She emphasised that this training is a must for shipping, warehousing, logistics, and port workers, especially those who handle dangerous goods. Scheduled to run from September 9-11, the programme will cover the identification and classification of hazardous materials, safe handling and storage procedures, international labelling standards, and compliance with global safety regulations.
